Sent British open mail via American Packet during the three month interval between the implementation of the Anglo-French convention of ending 1 Jan. 1857 and the U.S. - French Postal Convention effective 1 Apr. 1857. The steamer Africa departed on the 18th so this was routed per the Ocean Line steamer Washington departing New York 21 Feb., arriving Southampton 7 March. On reverse is blue embossed cameo for McKesson & Robbins Wholesale Druggists .
