United States. NY. Buffalo, NY. Erie Co. (open 1821+). Dated 1901/09/17. Two duplex "12" on unpaid cover to Germany. First duplex where a stamp would normally be, the second on the reverse ties a Pan-American label that seals the flap. Blue crayon around the seal indicates it was not accepted as postage. At left is a red Pan-American embossed logo with the "return in five days" crossed out (no return address on the cover). At lower left is a "SPOT 11" seapost cancel (Hosking TA/X18). Blue crayon "80" denotes 80pf (20c) due from the addressee. 80pf equivalent to 10c double weight letter & 10c penalty. The cover shows an indent at the top that indicates enclosures adding weight. At lower left on the reverse is a 28 Sept. JNGOLSTADT receiving cds.
