Cussler & hand stamp "Request". The original red (tied in two places) NY "EXCHANGE" label was removed as it was over the stamps. DLO hand stamps of Melbourne (June 13) & Minneapolis (?) 8c double weight postage + 10c registered fee paid for all the destinations. Cover trimmed right with light soiling.

United States. OH. Cleveland, OH. Cuyahoga Co. Dated 1941/09/15. Double strike machine cancel ties 2c-3c Defense issues (#900-901) on cover (vertical fold) to Australia. Adelaide markings include "Retour, Unclaimed, Non Reclame, Not Known By Letter Carrier Adelaide & boxed Not Known by Postman" with initials. There is an indistinct violet G.P.O Adelaide under other markings. "Held For Postage hand stamp crossed out. On reverse is Nov 17, 1941 Adelaide Dead Letter Office" hand stamp. The cover returned to San Francisco on Feb. 4, 1942 where it received a violet pointing hand "Returned to writer/Unclaimed/From San Francisco" hand stamp. In Adelaide prior to Pearl Harbor, returned to San Francisco after start of WW II.
