Earliest known usage of a Type 1 "Paid 2" handstamp on a turned cover with a cds of Richmond, VA. dated July 13, 1861. This is a drop rate cover addressed to Mr. W.H. Brannder. A few years later Mr Brannder addressed the same envelope to Franklin Davis in Staunton, VA. ordering three trees. A four margin CSA #12AD tied to a CDS of Richmond, VA. dated March 21 (1863-1864) was used. On page 74 of Peter Powell's Richmond book, he mentions that the "PAID 2" type 1 was used from July 17, 1861 - July 24, 1863. 26 covers have been recorded, no record of the number of turned covers in the total.
